The first step to finding the money you need for college: Completing the FAFSA® Sallie Mae Logo
Mary, the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, aka the FAFSA®, is the single most important thing your students can do to get money to help pay for college. It’s the only way they can apply for federal or state financial aid. The FAFSA® will determine their eligibility for grants, scholarships, work-study programs, and federal student loans.

As this year’s seniors start to receive their college acceptance letters, many will need a crash course in financial aid.
You’ll likely be the first person they go to with their questions, and College Money Matters has two fun and colorful guides that can help:
  1. A quick video that clearly and conversationally explains how student loans work
  2. A free, downloadable calendar that colorfully shows what to expect – and what to do – regarding Federal financial aid.
Just check out the links below to experience these tools for yourself.

Dear Colleague,

Could you use some help?

We know that beyond all of your other responsibilities as a high school counselor, you are also trying to make sure that you guide students in making academic and career plans. It must seem close to impossible to reach all of your students, especially all those for whom you may be the only source of college preparation assistance. With graduation quickly approaching and so much hinging on their academic success before and after graduation, we realize the challenges you face.

We truly want to help you, even in some small way.

Recently, we hosted and recorded a very generic Financial Aid workshop designed to assist
all high school seniors and their parents. We were thinking that this could be a way for us to lend you a helping hand. This workshop may be especially useful to those parents who are just now getting ready to file their FAFSA, or have recently received notice that they have been selected for verification.

We would be delighted if sharing this video saves you some of your valuable time while also providing your student’s parents with:

  • A preliminary foundation and understanding of the basics of the Financial Aid process
  • A glossary of terms used
  • A familiarity with the different types of aid available
  • A list of items required when filing their FAFSA

We wish you and your students a wonderful spring semester and healthy emergence from the pandemic.
