Countdown to Graduation #21

Dear Parents,
I hope this message finds you well. As we enter the final stretch of the school year, your support is crucial in helping our students succeed and prepare for their futures as doctors, lawyers, entrepreneurs, and more. Please discuss the following important topics with your student:
Hallway Conduct
Some students continue to linger in the hallways during class time, often with various excuses. When a security guard or staff member stops your student, it's because we genuinely care about their safety and academic focus. We ask for your partnership in holding them accountable for being in class when they should be.
School Lateness
We've observed a recurring issue with students arriving late to class, even when they are dropped off at school as early as 7:00 AM. Many spend valuable learning time socializing instead of preparing for their classes. This is directly impacting their academic success; **the large majority of students who are failing are doing so in their first three periods because they simply aren't in class.** Please address this at home. You can monitor your student's attendance and tardiness records in PowerSchool.
Cell Phone Usage
Students should not be using cell phones during school hours. In preparation for the upcoming state mandate regarding cell phone use, we are taking a proactive approach. If a student is found using electronics in class without teacher permission, they will be asked to leave the classroom. In such cases, you will be required to come to the school to address the issue.
These guidelines are in place to help our students become resourceful, prioritize their academics, and take responsibility for their performance. We kindly ask that you hold your students to the highest standards at home.
For the next two weeks, we need everyone to be extremely focused. I strongly recommend reducing screen time to two hours per day and ensuring all electronic devices are put away after 9:00 PM each night.
Thank you for your continued partnership in your child's education.
Sincerely,
Shawn F. Brown, PhD
Principal, Uniondale High School
