Countdown to Graduation #21

Dear Parents,
I hope this message finds you well. As we enter the final stretch of the school year, your support is crucial in helping our students succeed and prepare for their futures as doctors, lawyers, entrepreneurs, and more. Please discuss the following important topics with your student:
Hallway Conduct
Some students continue to linger in the hallways during class time, often with various excuses. When a security guard or staff member stops your student, it's because we genuinely care about their safety and academic focus. We ask for your partnership in holding them accountable for being in class when they should be.
School Lateness
We've observed a recurring issue with students arriving late to class, even when they are dropped off at school as early as 7:00 AM. Many spend valuable learning time socializing instead of preparing for their classes. This is directly impacting their academic success; **the large majority of students who are failing are doing so in their first three periods because they simply aren't in class.** Please address this at home. You can monitor your student's attendance and tardiness records in PowerSchool.
Cell Phone Usage
Students should not be using cell phones during school hours. In preparation for the upcoming state mandate regarding cell phone use, we are taking a proactive approach. If a student is found using electronics in class without teacher permission, they will be asked to leave the classroom. In such cases, you will be required to come to the school to address the issue.
These guidelines are in place to help our students become resourceful, prioritize their academics, and take responsibility for their performance. We kindly ask that you hold your students to the highest standards at home.
For the next two weeks, we need everyone to be extremely focused. I strongly recommend reducing screen time to two hours per day and ensuring all electronic devices are put away after 9:00 PM each night.
Thank you for your continued partnership in your child's education.
Sincerely,
Shawn F. Brown, PhD

Dear Parents/Guardians,
Many of our students are currently cutting school. Please find your child's location. If your child is at Long Beach, I strongly advise you to tell them to leave the vicinity. It is not safe for our children to be at that location. As a parent, and as a leader, I am asking you to please find your child's location and ensure they are not cutting class and going to the beach.

New Program Alert: If your elementary school child is registered and participating in the Passport to Innovation Summer program, there is a new after care program taking place at the same location (California Avenue Elementary School) immediately following the district's program. See flyer for details and reserve your child's spot as soon as possible.

Dear Uniondale School Community,
As the school year nears its end, I want to provide important updates regarding summer school and how we can partner to support your child's success.
Please be aware that summer school is now a privilege for select students and not available to all. Availability will be significantly reduced moving forward. In the past, it was open to all grades, but this will no longer be the case.
In all honesty, we have observed that many students who are failing are doing so due to a lack of attendance, incomplete assignments, or prioritizing socializing over academic engagement. This behavior is unacceptable, and students will not be rewarded with multiple opportunities to rectify these actions through summer school.
This change emphasizes the critical need for students to take full advantage of the academic support offered during the regular school year, including alternative assessments, Regents preparation, and credit recovery. Students who do not actively engage in these opportunities may not be eligible for summer school, as demonstrating initiative now is key. We are also developing criteria to identify students who may only need targeted support rather than the full summer program.
Our priority for summer school will be primarily for seniors, juniors, and students focused on Regents mastery, as well as those with the most pressing academic needs.
To further support your child's academic responsibility and understanding of consequences, we encourage your partnership. Please consider:
Limiting electronic device use, especially during study time.
Ensuring approximately two hours of daily study.
Regularly checking in with teachers.
Reviewing progress reports carefully.
Scheduling meetings with administrators to discuss your child's progress.
We urge all students to remain focused and proactive. By working together, we can empower our scholars to succeed.
Sincerely,
Shawn Brown

Dear Parents,
I hope this email finds you well. I am writing to address our student dress code, as it is crucial that we guide our students in choosing clothing that is appropriate for their age and the school setting.
Unfortunately, some of our students are wearing attire that is unsuitable for school, and in some cases, inappropriate in any context for children. Such clothing can be distracting and may draw negative attention. Specifically, exposed cleavage, visible stomachs, low-riding pants, ski masks, hoodies, durags, exposed underwear, body suits, short skirts, and similar items are not permitted.
Parents, your partnership in this matter is essential. I kindly request that you ask your students to show you what they plan to wear before they leave for school each day. Furthermore, I encourage you to review your child's wardrobe and remove any clothing items that do not meet our dress code standards.
Our goal is to ensure that our students remain focused on their academics and not on fashion trends that are inappropriate for the school environment.
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation in helping us maintain a positive and productive learning environment for all our students.
Sincerely,
Shawn F. Brown, Ph.D.
